Aikido is a Japanese martial art which derives mainly from Daito-ryu Aiki-jujutsu. Founded by O Sensei Morihei Ueshiba (1883 – 1969), the fundamental principles emphasise evading, neutralising and redirecting attacks by blending with the attacker. We do this by exploiting the natural motions of joints to throw and immobilise an attacker.
Aikido is often translated as “the way of harmonious spirit”. O Sensei’s (the founder’s) goal was for practitioners to defend themselves reconciling aggression without violence.
In practicing Aikido we work to coordinate the mind, body and spirit. The benefits include: increased awareness, balance, fitness and flexibility.
